London-based landscape and portrait artist Daisy Sims-Hilditch trained at Charles Cecil Studios in Florence. Strong classical influences are clearly at play in her work and a fondness for impressionist landscapes. “I aim to capture light in all of my paintings and particularly love painting “contre jour” or “against the sun” where by the sun is in front of me. When you look at the landscape with the sun un front of you the colour as somewhat lost and you are confronted with an array of tonal values; it is a bit like a jigsaw puzzle fitting them all together. I squint a lot, which simplifies objects into their appropriate values. This painting was painted in this way early in the morning on the Hamble river. The sparkling highlights on the water appear only when working contre jour, I particularly love painting water this wary” she explains.
